Smoking is very harmful to the heart and the body and increases your risk of heart and circulatory disease.
If you have had a recent heart attack, you may have had a conversation with the Doctors about how smoking is likely to have contributed to your heart attack.
Smoking is harmful to the heart as it makes the artery walls more sticky. As a result, more plaque then sticks to the artery walls causing them to block meaning less blood supply to the heart muscle.
As well as causing blockages to your arteries, smoking can also:
- Increase your heart rate
- Increase your blood pressure
- Reduce the amount of oxygen getting around the body.
